Many people associate cosmetic surgery with the alteration of facial features; with perhaps a few exceptions, the ideas that usually come to mind whenever cosmetic surgery is mentioned are nose surgery, eyelid surgery, and so on. However, in addition to breast augmentation, there are numerous common cosmetic surgical procedures for other areas of the body as well. The fact is that people have a lot of worries about their overall appearance, and this means that any ugly or uncommon aesthetic feature, whether it’s on the face or any other visible area, can have negative consequences. When people aren’t comfortable with their own physical features, it can keep them from enjoying their lives to the fullest, and sometimes, even regarding the anything below the face, the issue cannot be corrected effectively through any means but cosmetic surgery. Most cosmetic surgical procedures for the body are referred to collectively as “body cosmetic surgery”. These operations aim to change the shape of the body, which is usually accomplished by removing excess fat or skin as well as by lifting the remaining tissues.
Liposculpture is the most common of these procedures. Liposuction involves the use of a surgical tube device called a cannula and a suction device called an aspirator to extract fat. A narrow incision is made in the target area, and liquid is added to the area to balance out the quantity of fat being removed. Liposuction is a good option for addressing with a problem faced by many people, and as such it’s not surprising that it’s one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures available. Liposuction does not really work as a weight-loss method, because the actual quantity of fat removed is relatively insignificant; rather, liposuction is for healthy individuals who, despite sufficient exercise, cannot seem to get rid of fat from specific problem areas. Common problem areas include the neck, the abdomen, the thighs, and, for men, the “love handles.” There are several more refined liposuction techniques such as SmartLipo and Liposculpture which have been created in recent years and which refine the liposuction process and involve even less scarring and risk of other complications.
Another very popular operation, particularly among women, is the abdominoplasty, also known as the “tummy tuck.” This procedure works to tighten loose skin and excise unnecessary tissue from the abdomen, a problem which is especially prevalent for individuals who have undergone significant weight loss, and women who have given birth. Incisions are made in different areas depending on the extensiveness of the procedure. In some cases, even just a single incision may be sufficient in order to carry out the operation. The belly button can be raised during the course of the tummy tuck operation if needed.
Body lifts are another type of body contouring. These include thigh lifts and buttock lifts. These are related in the sense that, in both, excess tissues are removed and the remaining tissues are lifted in the target areas. They result in a rejuvenated, tighter look to the area. An abdominoplasty may also be added to a thigh lift and buttock lift, resulting in what is known as the lower body lift. Similarly, the upper body lift combines the upper arm lift, which addresses the “batwing” deformity that affects many women, and the breast lift, which, perhaps not surprisingly, sees the breasts lifted. The upper and lower body lift can be combined into a “full body lift,” one of the most drastic cosmetic operations available.
Certain types of implants, including buttock implants and calf implants, are also considered part of the body contouring field. Buttock implants aim to increase the volume of the buttock area, and may also result in a tighter feel and appearance. Calf implants can address genetic issues which lead to a reduction in the muscle tone of the legs, or may simply be added for cosmetic reasons. Calf implantation is a procedure particularly common among bodybuilders, because the calves are very hard to develop fully even when the “correct” training program is adhered to.
Any surgical procedure involves certain risks, as well as the necessity of significant recovery time. Please consult with a surgeon if you would like to determine if any of these operations is right for you.
